Ok I'm bored so allow me to present
Random StarCraft Trivia:
Today's lesson: Protoss Psyonic Energies, the difference between Dark and Light
Conclave
Conclave Protoss use a naturaly occurring Psyonic link that is now called the Khala. This link binds all Protoss together in something that closely resembles a hive mind thought each individual Protoss retains their own identity and free will. The bond is so strong that no Protoss can hide their thoughts from one another. The most powerfull of thier psyonic energies comes from a racial Psyonic gestalt, each individual Protoss uses dreadlock like nerve cords emerging from the back of the head to tap into this energy. This same process is what links the entire Protoss race to eachother.
Nerazim also known as the Dark Templar:
About 1500, Terran reckoning, a group of Templar severed their connection from the Khala, by ritually severing their nerve cords and using clamps to stop energy bleed. These rebel Protoss would eventually become known as the Dark Templar. Though they retain some of the Protoss racial abilities, such as energy shielding, most power granted by the Khala is unavailable. Or it was until they discovered the Void. The Void is a mysterious phenomenon. Unlike warp space, which is a dimension unto itself, the Void appears to be a manifestation of the material universe – the "cold void of space." The Dark Templar understand the Void and it serves two purposes for them. It is from the Void that they draw energy to use psionic powers, the Void provides the Dark Templar with psionic powers unheard of by their Conclave brethren. In addition, the "currents" of the Void allow FTL travel for the Dark Templar. The Void plays a huge part in Dark Templar religion and they consider anything that "taints" the Void to be unholy. Recently, certain Dark Templar have mentioned "an ancient voice whispering from the Void," chilling them to the core.
So in short the Conclave Protoss, more commonly simply known as Protoss, draw their power from a Racial network that all are connected to, and the Dark Templar draw their power from the Void, which is a strange but natural part of the universe.

I actually needed very little research to provide you with all this information, thus proving I am a much bigger nerd then originally thought. I have an idea for another one of these if anyone is interested, but if no one really cares I won't bother you with unneeded information.

Yes though it is very rare. In fact the only recorded case was when a group of Protoss survivors stranded on Aiur, the Tal'darim, were cut off from the Khala and developed abilities similar to those of the Dark Templar.
Then there was Tassadar, a very powerful High Templar that accepted the teachings of Zeratul and was able to combine both the psyonic energies of the Templar and the dark power of the Void into something that had never been seen before and hasn't been done since. He used this power to destroy the Zerg Overmind at the cost of his own life.
The ability to merge with the shadows however is not a naturally occurring ability and has to be taught.
