I don't understand everyone's insistence on 'who should be recast as the Joker?' topics. I've seen them everyone. This is assuming that the Joker will be in the third film, which he will not be. Say is C. Murphy passed away after Batman Begins, I doubt anyone would be asking who would they recast for Scarecrow in the next film. Chris Bale is contracted for a third film, Chris Nolan is not (although I can say positively that he'll direct the next one, he wouldn't leave such an exceptional franchise to someone else). The Joker's installment as a Batman villain in Nolan's world is finished, he is not dead. But that does not mean he will/has to return again in another film; than it becomes episodic. There will be a new villain, who we don't know. Most likely a character they can work with that isn't too cartoony or outdated.

Rest in Peace Heath Ledger. Gone too soon. My condolences with his family, wife and especially his daughter Matilda. However, I won't pretend that this man was a saint; although he died by overdose in sleeping pills (Ambien?) he DID do drugs in his past, acknowledging what he's doing wrong. I wished he would of had more self control, he blew everyone away (especially made me proud for all the doubters) as early as the promotional stills and trailers in 2007, which he was still alive -- which makes me mad when people insult the public by saying if he wins any posthumous awards, it's because of his death.

Whoa, got on a tangent there.

I believe its already been finalized to be Riddler.

Penguin and Catman are also probably gonna be in there, since there is a casting out already for those characters.

Reason why I say it is gonna be Riddler- is because I think they've already started viral marketing on the next movie. (John Depp to play Riddler?)

http://www.hollywood.com/news/Johnny_Depp_to_Play_The_Riddler/5283266

I saw some poster, probably a hoax. Looked authentic though.

Word has it- that the catwoman maybe angelina jolie. (fingers crossed!)

Ooh, Angelina Jolie as Catwoman, that's a rather nice prospect, even better than when Halle Berry was Catwoman (well, in my opinion).

Oh, and Johnny Depp would rock as the Riddler.

I think it would be really hot if Michelle Pfeiffer would put on the Catwoman costume again. :D

I have to agree about putting Angelina in the catsuit, since she's been known to play action roles and still be unbelievabley sexy at the same time. Those are basically the top two qualifications for playing Catwoman.

As for Depp as Edward Nigma... I'm a bit ambivilent. I mean, yeah, I've been a fan of Depp for a very long time (ever since Edward Scissorhands, to be honest) but to don the green bowler and question-mark suit?... Then again, I've been proven wrong in the past (surprise, Heath Ledger was an amazing Joker!!). If Johnny Depp played the Riddler somewhere between his Hunter S. Thompson (raving lunatic, yet slightly goofy) and his Willy Wonka (total goofball, yet slightly insane), it might just work...

It should be fine as long as they don't try to turn Riddler into too dark a character, like making him a serial-killer, ala "Saw", or something equally awful and unneccessary. I've read some fan speculation on this point already, and I just think it'd be a shame to throw the Riddler into the same camp as the Zodiac Killer. He's the master of puzzles, a personification of mystery... hell, his name is E. Nigma! Just keep him close to the true heart of the original character: the obsessive, highly egotistical criminal with a penchant for showmanship, who sees in the Batman a detective worthy enough to be his adversary. There really shouldn't be any need to make him more "gritty"... his deathtraps and intricate puzzles should be more than enough to keep the world's greatest detective on his toes.

Throw in a bit of Captain Jack Sparrow for good measure.

Why am I reading what I'm reading? lol.

There are no "fakes" there are just fan made posters. Its been a month since the movie came out and people are already jumping to conclusions? Making premature so called "rumors" that Johnny Depp will be playing the Riddler and/or Angelina Jolie will be playing Catwoman? I said it before, nothing has been finalized...let alone a casting choice; not even close.

Nothing, sorry if I sounded a bit rude before. But Depp and Jolie are A-List stars, who's names will overshadow their characters no matter how good actors they are.

To me when I saw The Dark Knight back in July. It was an amazing movie. Perhaps the "greatest comic book movie ever made". Though many still make the argument that the first Superman film was the best ever.

Heath Ledger was the perfect Joker. I enjoyed the dialogue in the end between Batman and Joker in the end. Very true to the comics. And Two-Face was an amazing thing to see. That make-up was incredibly well done.

Memorable and unforgettable.

They should not re-cast Joker, they should simply keep him locked away in Arkham, off-camera... if they're going to be serious about having the Riddler as the next badguy featured in the third film, then they should focus all their attention on him, and not worry about trying to throw in some cameo appearance by the Joker (like they did with Cillian Murphy's "Scarecrow" in Dark Knight). A villain as spectacular as the Joker just doesn't work well for cameo appearances, especially since he loves the limelight so much.

I know nothing's been finalized yet, but if they indeed decide to go with the Riddler as the main badguy in the third movie, here are my thoughts on how his character should be treated... While all of the "Nolan-verse" characters are more gritty and realistic in style compared to versions of the characters in the past, I would definitely try to avoid turning Edward Nygma into a serial killer. Some folks have been speculating that the only way to make the Riddler more "edgy" is to make him a diabolical madman on the same scale as Jigsaw from the "Saw" movies, which I feel is a terrible mistake and a definite misunderstanding of who the Riddler character really is.

The Riddler is a brilliant but egotistical person, much more a performance artist than a real criminal. His penchant for leaving behind clues is all a part of him showing off, although recently in the comics it has been hinted that his love of leaving clues in riddle form is all a part of an obsessive compulsive disorder. His compulsion to leave behind clues and his desire to commit well-planned and intricate crimes are at odds with each other, a conflicting paradox that perhaps makes his intentions all the more mysterious.

At his core, however, should be his obsession with mystery... the riddles, his chosen "out-of-costume" alias ("E. Nygma", or "enigma"), and the various deathtraps that he puts Batman in throughout the history of the comics and television shows. In recent comics, in fact, the character has given up crime (supposedly) and become a detective, perhaps to one-up Batman himself by beating him at his own game. And that should be the crux of the Batman/Riddler dynamic: his need to prove himself the most brilliant tactician in the world, and sees in the costumed crimefighter a worthy adversary. Whle Batman and Joker's relationship as arch-nemeses is based upon being near polar opposites (Batman on the side of law, Joker on the side of complete anarchy), the Riddler exists as a cynical view of order... his crimes and riddles are so intricately planned-out, he's practically daring someone to stop him. The third movie should be the point when Batman has to truly prove himself as a competent detective, and set himself apart from merely being the guy with all the cool gadgets.

In the end, the Riddler is trying to become a personification of the riddles and mysteries that he has spent his life obsessing over. He wishes to become the Sphinx, the Minotaur's Labyrinth, and the Gordian Knot, and the Batman has to contend with this by using his intellect and, like the Gordian Knot example, having to think "outside of the box" in order to apprehend such a clever adversary.

johnny, i do beleive i have found my own adversary.

your the only person i've met that truly understands the layout of the batman charachters so well. what makes them tick, and why they do what they do.

you know the way they think and act on those thoughts. ours is a rare gift. to truly become what ever we read or watch, am i right? tell me, when you read something, you feel what is going on as you read, you understand their emotions as they move along in the story. it\'s like you are the charachters, right?
